Lithium orotate is lithium bound to orotic acid, making it a salt. Orotic acid improves the effects of lithium many fold by increasing lithium’s bioavailability. It is thought that lithium’s mood stabilizing effects come mainly from its ability to inhibit IMPase, an enzyme involved in the recycling and synthesis of inositol, a primary component of the phosphoinositol signaling pathway.
