In a two-year, multicenter double blind placebo-controlled trial,  alpha lipoic acid provided statistically significant support  for several aspects of peripheral nerve function, including sensory  nerve conduction velocity, motor nerve conduction velocity, and  sensory nerve action potential. A separate double blind, placebo  controlled trial also revealed the positive effects of alpha  lipoic acid on sensory nerve function. Additional studies reveal  the ability of alpha lipoic acid to maintain healthy matrix metalloproteinase-9  (MMP-9) activity, supporting endothelial cell function and the  integrity of nervous system cells.
